My personal experiences with using multimedia as a student have been exceptional experiences. Not only is it easy to access the internet while working, but online classes make it more engaging. I can easily read responses on message boards from other students, that gives me a different perspective than what I may have been thinking. In a large classroom, it's easy to become distracted or lost in the crowd of answers. In a classroom I teach, the media is a really effective tool for engagement. Students can use the smartboard to answer questions, respond to questions on the board, as well as correcting their peers. Using media in the classroom serves as a tool to hold students accountable for what they can improve on, as well as adapting to one style of learning, visually. The possibilities I envision for using multimedia with teaching and assessment can result in endless criteria. Instead of using paper and pencil and studying from a book, I see that using the internet as an additional study tool helps as well. It’s easier to study what makes sense to the brain instead of assuming everyone will learn from a textbook. Teaching with technology is able to tap into different learning styles that the student can focus on. Having a laptop or tablet to use as a guide gives the practice, reading, studying, and visual learning that each individual caters to most. Multimedia essentially gives students multiple platforms of absorbing information; much like the way there are different learning styles. Additionally, when used as an assessment tool, it challenges students to think of how they would like to present the information they have learned and would like to share.
The only concern I have for using these multimedia techniques is the sake of students relying or becoming dependent upon it to get answers instead of using it to learn more. With the internet so
easily accessible, it is easy to get a quick answer out of Google or Siri. Research is a steady and
positive way to bring education into the classroom, but it can be misused by the youth as well.
